How to care for your Sterling Silver Jewellery

  •  Wear it all the time!

You can avoid tarnish by wearing your jewellery often. The oils in your skin will “clean” the silver and keep it looking shiny.

  • Blackened Stamping Fading Away

Several pieces from my range are oxidized with a chemical called Platinol to give the lettering a black appearance. This chemical naturally fades away over time with the use of oils, hand creams, shampoos etc so this is normal.

You can either send your piece back to me to be redone if you wish (at a small charge) and this will be returned to youwith a high polish just like new! Please contact me if you wish to have this service for your jewellery. Otherwise, you can use a sharpie! Fill in the letters with your fine point sharpie and then buff away with a silver cloth  - but be careful not to buff too hard or the lettering made fade.

  • Bicarbonate of soda in Tin foil (aluminium foil)

Line a bowl with some tin foil and pop a good tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda in it. Add in some boiling water and place your silver jewellery in the bowl and leave to soak for a few minutes, you can help it along by stirring it.  This will take off the blackened tarnish from your silver pieces. Rinse with water and dry.

  • Avoid exposure

Contact with household chemicals, perspiration, rubber, chlorinated water, or any substances which contain sulfur (e.g., mayonnaise, eggs, mustard, onions, latex, wool), will cause corrosion and tarnish — so it’s a good idea to remove silver jewelry when doing household chores. Direct sunlight also causes silver to tarnish, so be sure to take off your silver jewelry before you go swimming and sunbathing.

  • Storage

As exposure to air tarnishes it, storing silver in airtight plastic bags is a great preventative measure. Just make sure you don’t store multiple pieces in the same bag: silver is a soft metal, so the individual pieces can scratch each-other.

  • Silver cloth

To quickly get your silver looking shiny again simply give it a rub with a silver cleaning cloth. You can buy these on amazon or ebay, they come treated or non-treated and amazing at giving your jewellery a quick sparkle!
